Fire Fighting
Pay's Air Service currently operates 5 AT-802F aircraft on contract and ad-hoc arrangements in New South Wales, Victoria and Portugal. Pay's Air Service has also operated in Italy on contract with the AT-802F. These aircraft are currently the largest capacity fixed wing firebombing aircraft on contract in Australia. They are unique in that they are designed specifically for firebombing unlike other agricultural type firebombing aircraft which are modified for the fire related work. Pay’s were the first in the world to ever use the AT-802F for aerial fire fighting.
Pay's Air Service have been heavily involved in fire fighting for many years and especially during the current fire season being based in Victoria, NSW and most recently in Portugal incorporating both air attack and fire spotting.
Pay’s sent four of their
AT-802F aircraft over to Portugal along with one of Dunn Aviations
AT-802F to help assist in the most recent fire season in Europe.
Not only were our aircraft being used for the front line fire attack
but also our Australian pilots were involved in all the action.
This is not the first time that Pays have had to deal with international
situations as they have also successfully completed a fire season
in Italy in 2001. Pay’s will be returning to Portugal in 2009.
Air Attack AT-802F
The AT-802F is built in America and carries 3200 litres of fire retardant or foam solution. Powered by a 1400 horsepower Pratt & Whitney turbine engine, the aircraft has a cruise speed of approximately 160 knots or 300 km/hr. The specially designed computer controlled firebombing doors which run parallel with the longitudinal axis of the aircraft allow the load to exit the aircraft in less than 2 seconds. This system offers infinite variations in drop options.
These aircraft are the most cost-effective fire bombers for the Australian situation. Pay's Air Service are able to adapt to the needs of both local and international legislation of which was required for the Italy and Portugal contracts. The AT-802F robustness and power enables them to work from short, less sophisticated airstrips that are numerous across the fire prone regions of Australia, while still delivering full loads of fire retardant mixtures. These aircraft are able to deliver the retardant to the fire at a lower cost per litre than other aircraft.
Fire Spotting
Pay's Air Service not only have the Air Attack capability but also the observer aircraft which are able to be sent out to patrol the fire stricken area to give reports back to the aircraft and ground team. The Cessna Birddog is an excellent piece of machinery for this task.
